The Wadden Sea (“Wattenmeer”) was added to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List in 2009. It was formed in the last Ice Age and displays landscapes in every phase of development. Here nature, plants and animals must continuously adapt to ever-changing conditions. The Wadden Sea is unique in the world in providing a habitat for around 10,000 different plant and animal species.
The ecosystem of the dunes on Sylt is also unlike anything else in Germany.
The Hörnum Heide (heath) is barren of trees, but home to plants like the dwarf rush. On a guided tour you can discover sun dew, natterjack toads and other unusual species of this “coastal desert”.
On the sandspit off Hörnum’s East Beach you can observe migratory and breeding birds typical of the Wadden Sea.
