Maritime Church

Hörnum has a second famous landmark besides its lighthouse. Though relatively new, the St. Thomaskirche is already a listed building. Designed by architect Martin Bernhard Christiansen, this whitewashed limestone church was built in 1970. Its design incorporates maritime elements that evoke the lives of the islanders and the significance of the sea. With its irregular ground plan, the building has the appearance of a large sail. The furnishings are simple, but flashes of colour set off the biblical scenes depicted in the stained-glass windows. The most modern feature is the altar. Dedicated in 2005, its design plays with the shapes and symbols of waves, sand and light. The regular concerts on the church’s Hillebrand organ are a truly special listening experience thanks to the building’s excellent acoustic and cathedral-like echo.
