Cat Festival Sylt

From 30th June – 8th July 2012 catamaran sailors from all over Germany chase titles and trophies in two regattas starting at Hörnum East Beach. The Festival Week, organised by Sylt Catamaran Club, begins with the Super Sail Sylt regatta (Hobie Cat 16) and ends with the long distance regatta “60 Seamiles off Sylt”, racing from Hörnum to List and back.

During the Cat Festival Sylt 2012, Sylt Catamaran Club will offer a packed programme in and around its clubhouse of beach parties and barbeques, to which competitors, Hörnum locals, islanders and visitors are equally welcome!

60 Seamiles off Sylt (7th & 8th July 2012)
Competitors in the Sylt Catamaran Club’s long distance regatta race in one of the North Sea’s most challenging sailing environments. 30 to 40 catamarans start from the East Beach around 1 pm and race the length of the island to List. Depending on wind strength, these fast double hull vessels can complete the distance in 2 to 4 hours.

The first tricky manoeuvre is off Westerland, where the cats have to pass between the tide gauge and the shore. From there they race past Wenningstedt and Kampen to the “Ellenbogen” (“elbow”). Having circumnavigated this northern tip of the island, they suddenly find calm waters as they approach the harbour at List, before landing on the beach at List Servicemen’s Club. Everyone parties that evening on Hörnum’s east beach, but not for too long! For the race starts again in List at 10 a.m. next morning! The race finishes back at Hörnum west 2 - 4 hours later (depending on wind). The east beach is a good vantage point from which to watch the final stages of the race.
